listening to your conscience Tue Apr 17 16:42:00 -0600 2007

Liz MacClure in Christchurch recently received a letter from a friend who is on a journey of working out what it means to be a follower of Jesus...

“I went to a garden shop today to redeem a gift voucher. Just before I made my purchase I looked at a glass pukeko. As I touched it, its beak fell off. At first I thought ‘what am I going to do…especially as it costs $39.99.’

I carried on and made my purchase and got in the car to leave. As I was pulling out of the car park, I felt so guilty. I knew that if I drove home I would have to ring and confess or drive back because my conscience was bothering me.

I drove out the exit and back in the entrance. I went and got the pukeko and took it to the counter.

The lady said ‘Did you forget something?’

I said ‘I broke this and just had to come back and be honest and offer to pay for it’.

She said as she touched me lightly on the shoulder, ‘They’re temperamental – don’t worry you don’t have to pay for it.’

As I traveled home I thought of you and how you talk about how if you don’t listen to your conscience and be honest your heart becomes hardened and harder to be sensitive to the things of God.

I thought maybe what I did today is part of being a Christian in today’s world. I never find it easy to do the right thing but I always feel better afterwards.”
